Mentoring Support in Islington: Bridging the Gap

For those at risk of homelessness, navigating the complexities of housing, finances, and access to vital services can feel overwhelming.
Bridging the Gap offers a solution through its dedicated network of volunteer mentors, who provide consistent, personalised support to individuals facing unstable housing situations, including those living in temporary accommodation. Over the past 9 years, this project has made a lasting impact on the lives of many by helping them regain control, rebuild their confidence, and achieve their goals.
The mentoring programme is built on trust and connection, with mentors meeting clients weekly in a comfortable, public setting like a café. These mentors are DBS checked, trained, and supported by professional supervisors who regularly check in, ensuring both the mentor and mentee have the tools and support they need to succeed. Whether it’s helping with housing applications, managing finances, or accessing healthcare, each mentor provides a vital bridge to a more stable and independent future.
Many individuals in temporary accommodation or facing homelessness struggle with isolation, lack of confidence, and difficulty navigating bureaucracy. For many, the challenges of explaining their needs, filling out forms, or even securing access to technology can be overwhelming. This is where Bridging the Gap steps in – offering emotional support, practical assistance, and a steady hand to help individuals overcome these barriers. The project’s holistic approach not only addresses practical objectives like securing stable housing or employment but also focuses on reducing isolation and fostering independence.
Through outreach efforts, collaborations with local agencies, and regular community engagement, Bridging the Gap ensures that individuals who would benefit from mentoring are connected with this crucial support. The programme is also actively promoted through a monthly newsletter distributed to 70 local services and contacts, allowing for increased self-referrals and connections.
We are proud to provide funding for mentor training and support to help 3 individuals access this valuable service for a period of 4 months. By supporting the training of mentors and ensuring they receive the ongoing professional supervision they need, we are directly contributing to the empowerment of individuals in crisis, helping them take meaningful steps toward a brighter future.
