Individual Grant Programme Referee Partner: The Refugee Council
London boroughs: Hounslow, Newham, Tower Hamlets
Grant theme focus: Cost of living support for refugees and asylum seekers
The Refugee Council is the UK leading charity dedicated to supporting refugees and people seeking asylum. Established in 1951, it has over seven decades of experience assisting individuals who have fled war, violence, and persecution to rebuild their lives in Britain. The organisation offers a variety of support services, including legal support, mental health services, employment assistance, youth services, and community development.
Our grants have supported 3 of their beneficiaries residing in temporary accommodation, funding travel expenses to access educational and health services, as well as food and toiletries.
The Refugee Council shared about their clients:
“Her mental health has resulted in significant social isolation as she is fearful of leaving her room. She is facing a large degree of uncertainty as there has been no outcome to her homeless application and she does not have alternative housing arrangements.”
“The increasing cost of transport, food, and bills constitute a significant barrier for our client who has often mentioned how much he struggles making ends meet.”
“He has been diagnosed with PTSD and depression and has mobility issues. He has fallen out of the bed multiple times and the shower is not big enough for him to stand up. He currently only receives the standard allowance of Universal Credit, which is not sufficient to cover his living expenses.”
