How to help a homeless person in cold weather?

This winter, over 4,500 people in London will be sleeping rough.

As the temperatures drop, it’s more important than ever to look our for those who are experiencing homelessness. Winter weather can be harsh and life-threatening for those without a stable place to stay. Here are a few ways to help a homeless person this winter:

❄️ check on their well-being: sometimes a simple conversation or checking in can let someone know that they’re seen and not forgotten

❄️ provide hot food and drinks: remember to ask what the person needs! As anyone else, they might have dietary requirements or personal preferences

❄️ donate warm clothing, blankets, sleeping bags or coats: these can be lifelines for people on the street!

❄️ support homeless charities: donate to or volunteer with local shelters, food banks, and organisations that provide essential services for those in need

❄️ locate the nearest warm space: give directions to the person in need

❄️ gift an Oyster card: providing prepaid transport card can help a homeless person access shelter or stay warm while traveling

❄️ report rough sleepers: if you see someone sleeping rough, contact StreetLink to alert local services that can help. Always ask for consent!
