Empowering boys in Kingston: MAN & BOY

A positive male role model can have a life-changing impact on a child’s development. Research shows that children who have strong, supportive relationships with significant adult males experience improved self-esteem, better educational attainment, and stronger overall well-being. Yet, for many boys, particularly those facing instability or hardship, this vital support is missing.
We are proud to support the MAN & BOY Positive Families Programme, which provides mentoring and community activities for families living in temporary accommodation in Kingston. Many of the families referred to MAN & BOY are monitored under a Child in Need Plan, facing significant financial and housing instability. Through outdoor activities, enrichment programmes, and mediation sessions, this initiative helps families reconnect, rebuild trust, and create positive, lasting relationships.
MAN & BOY is dedicated to bridging this gap by working with boys aged 9-12 – a critical stage as they transition from primary to secondary school. This period can be challenging, and having a stable, encouraging male presence can make all the difference in helping them navigate change with confidence.
The Positive Families Programme has been designed in consultation with local families and referral agencies to ensure it meets the real needs of the community. Our funding has been directed towards the mentoring provision, a crucial part of their programme that provides guidance and encouragement for boys who need it most.
MAN & BOY said:
“On behalf of its beneficiaries, trustees and staff team, MAN & BOY would like to reiterate a heartfelt thanks to the Stef & Philips Foundation for facilitating such a difference in local lives.”
MAN & BOY shared a case study:
“A. was referred to us because he’d been struggling with his mental health post-covid. He suffers from anxiety and depression. His school recommended the MAN & BOY programme and A. attended with his father, W. They very clearly enjoyed their entire experience with MAN & BOY, but the highlights they shared were the positive impact of taking time out together, taking the risk of meeting other people in similar situations, and participating together in tailored activities designed by sector specialists.
In emotional words that summed up the impact on both father and son, W. reported that he simply ‘felt like he got his boy back’. He shared how Covid has taken its toll on A. who had lost his confidence and at times would not leave the house. The camp was more than they could have hoped for. A. said ‘I learned a lot about my dad’. W. reported: ‘I have learnt that a good father and son relationship is more than I used to think’.”
By investing in strong family connections and positive role models, we are helping to build brighter futures for young boys and their families in Kingston.
