Homes with Dignity: Providing Stability for Young People

For young people leaving the care system, moving into independent accommodation for the first time is a significant transition. Many arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs, facing empty rooms and limited financial resources. Without essentials like bedding, cooking equipment, or proper heating, these individuals often struggle to settle, which can lead to increased stress, tenancy issues, and social isolation.

Homes with Dignity is a Hackney-based charity dedicated to supporting these young people. By providing practical, low-cost interventions, they help transform sterile, empty spaces into functional homes, giving young people the stability they need to build their independence.

How our funding helped

Our grant provided targeted financial support to the Homes with Dignity “Transition Support Programme,” specifically aimed at 25 young people aged 16–30.

The funding was directly utilised to:

  • Provide Essential Living Items: Supplying bedding, basic kitchen equipment, and minor household fixes.
  • Improve Energy Security: Offering thermal items and energy assistance to ensure living spaces are warm and comfortable.
  • Facilitate Safety & Maintenance: Utilising a Pro Bono network of painters and handypersons to carry out simple, necessary repairs that improve safety and dignity in the home.
  • Support Furniture Provision: Through their “Trash to Treasure” initiative, we helped provide safe, refurbished furniture where appropriate.

Meeting an urgent need

The transition out of care is a high-pressure moment. Homes with Dignity operates on a “light-touch but timely” model, providing each young person with a consistent advocate. This advocate helps them navigate tenancy conditions, communicate with housing providers, and access local services. Our funding ensured that, alongside this guidance, the physical environment of the home supported their well-being rather than causing additional anxiety.

Impact on wellbeing

By addressing the physical gaps in a young person’s living space, Homes with Dignity reduces the stress that often leads to tenancy failure. Providing a warm bed or a functioning kitchen allows these young people to feel “steadier.” The programme not only improves their immediate physical environment but also boosts their confidence, as having a safe, decent place to live is the first step toward education, training, and employment.

Why this work matters

Homes with Dignity demonstrates that “support” does not always mean costly renovations or major infrastructure projects. Often, the most meaningful change comes from small, proportionate, and well-timed interventions. We are proud to partner with them to ensure that young people leaving care have the dignity, warmth, and security they deserve as they embark on their independent lives.
