How we’ve helped: Hot Line Meals Service

For many people living in temporary and emergency accommodation, preparing a hot meal is not something they can take for granted. Families are often placed in accommodation with limited or no cooking facilities, while others face barriers such as ill health, disability, or financial hardship that make it difficult to access nutritious food.

Hot Line Meals Service is a Hackney-based charity that supports vulnerable individuals and families in London by delivering daily hot and nutritious meals. With the help of 200 trained volunteers, the organisation prepares, packages, and delivers meals directly to those who need them most, ensuring support is tailored to the unique circumstances of people living in temporary accommodation.

How our funding helped

Our grant supported the organisation’s Emergency Accommodation Meal Support Programme, providing hot, freshly prepared meals to individuals and families living in temporary and emergency accommodation across Hackney and Haringey.

The funding contributed towards fresh ingredients, meal packaging, delivery costs, and essential kitchen overheads, helping the charity safely prepare and distribute meals to people who often have no means of cooking for themselves. Through this support, vulnerable households experiencing food insecurity and financial hardship were able to access reliable, nutritious meals during a period of instability and crisis.

Meeting an urgent need

Demand for the support continued to grow throughout the project, particularly among families placed into temporary accommodation at short notice. Other challenges were linked to the unstable circumstances of some beneficiaries, including frequent changes in accommodation or limited communication access.

Despite these obstacles, Hot Line Meals’ experienced volunteer network and close relationships with referral partners enabled the charity to respond quickly and continue delivering the support.

Impact on wellbeing

The project had a significant impact on both physical and emotional wellbeing. Regular access to healthy meals helped reduce hunger, improve nutrition, and ease some of the financial pressure faced by low-income households. For many beneficiaries, knowing that a meal would arrive each day reduced anxiety and stress at a time when many aspects of their lives felt uncertain.

The regular contact provided by volunteers also offered reassurance and connection, helping isolated individuals feel less alone.

Real stories of change

One family supported through the programme consisted of a mother and her two young children who had been placed in temporary accommodation after fleeing domestic difficulties. With no suitable kitchen facilities and limited income, the mother often skipped meals so her children could eat.

Regular meals deliveries helped ensure the family had access to nutritious food while reducing immediate financial pressures. The mother shared that the support gave her peace of mind during an extremely difficult period and allowed her to focus on creating a more stable future for her family.

Another beneficiary was an older adult living along in emergency accommodation following ill health. Due to mobility difficulties and social isolation, he struggled to access food consistently. Regular hot meals and contact with volunteers improved both his nutrition and emotional wellbeing, helping him feel more supported and connected.

Why this work matters

Hot Line Meals demonstrates how practical support can make an immediate and meaningful difference to people facing instability and poverty. We are proud to support the organisation and their work to ensure vulnerable people have access to food and the reassurance that they are not facing hardship alone.
