How we’ve helped: Martha House Association💌
For destitute migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers experiencing homelessness, life is filled with uncertainty, stress, and isolation. Many have fled unimaginable hardship, experienced trauma, and arrived in a city where they have little access to public funds, support networks, or space to rest. Days are spent navigating survival – finding food, attending appointments, or searching for housing – leaving almost no room to recover, reflect, or feel safe.
Martha House Association provides a lifeline for homeless migrants with no access to public funds; offering accommodation, food, community activities, advocacy, and guidance. Through their support, residents can build connections and regain stability.
Our support in action
In May 2025, we proudly awarded Martha House one of our Project Grants to fund recreational trips for people residing in their accommodation, giving them a rare opportunity to step away from the pressures of London. One group of 10 adults travelled to County Durham and stayed in a retreat centre, while another group of 7 went to Deal in Kent, hosted by welcoming local families. For many participants, these were first moments in years where they could leave survival mode behind.
Impact on wellbeing
Destitute individuals in temporary accommodation are often trapped in the city, unable to afford travel or breaks. Without a safe space, bodies remain on high alert and minds are constantly burdened with stress. These trips gave participants freedom and time to explore open spaces, try creative activities like pottery, and enjoy shared experiences – reminding them they are seen, valued, and supported.
Real stories of change
The organisation shared a real story of one of their beneficiaries:
“One young man, who is a refugee and has a lot of trauma from the conditions he endured, told us that the retreat was the only place his mind has relaxed since arriving in the UK. He was in an army camp for a few months until he got his refugee status; then he was on the streets over winter with no idea how to find accommodation. He was very stressed and traumatised. During the trip he was deeply moved and spent many hours relaxing and unwinding for the first time in years.”
Another participant of the trip shared:
“It was truly a holiday to remember! Not only did I get to explore the beautiful surroundings, but I also met some amazing people who made my trip even more special. We spent hours exploring the local sights like the beaches, castles, and cliffs. The warm hospitality and kindness made me feel right at home. I’m so grateful for the new connections I made and the memories we created together. Big thanks for making my holiday unforgettable.”
We are proud to support Martha House and the incredible work they do, offering not just accommodation, but moments of relief, joy, and community that empower people facing difficult circumstances to rebuild their lives.
