How we’ve helped: Up ‘N Away

For children living in temporary or emergency accommodation, school does not always end when the bell rings. Many return to overcrowded or unstable environments, often without a quiet space to study, access to support with homework, or even a regular hot meal. Over time, this can affect their confidence, wellbeing, and ability to keep up in school.

Up ‘N Away works to change that. The organisation supports children and young people in Hackney and Haringey through afterschool programmes that combine educational support with nutritious meals. With volunteers who include former beneficiaries, the project is rooted in the local community and shaped by a deep understanding of the challenges these young people face.

How our funding helped

Our grant supported the organisation’s 39-week afterschool homework club for 120 disadvantaged children aged 8-13 living in temporary or emergency accommodation. The funding contributed towards essential costs including food, venue hire, and staffing.

Each session provided a safe and structured space where children could receive help with their homework while also enjoying a hot meal.

Learning and nourishment combined

The programme is designed to support both educational and nutritional needs. Children receive tailored help with their schoolwork, allowing them to address gaps in learning and build confidence in their abilities.

At the same time, access to healthy meals means they are better able to focus, engage, and participate. By combining these two elements, the programme create an environment where children can truly benefit from the support.

Impact on wellbeing

For families facing housing insecurity, the programme offers both practical and emotional support. Parents are reassured knowing their children have a safe place to go after school, where they will be supported academically and provided with a healthy meal.

For children, this creates a sense of routine, stability, and belonging. Many become more confident, more engaged in their learning, and better able to focus at school. The sessions also help reduce stress at home, particularly for families who may not have the resources to provide consistent meals or academic support.

Why this work matters

Up ‘N Away shows how targeted, consistent support can make a lasting difference in a child’s life. By providing a safe space, academic guidance, and nutritious meals, they are helping young people build confidence, stay engaged in education, and move towards a more stable future.

We are proud to support Up ‘N Away and their work to ensure no child is held back by their circumstances.
